Ministry matters

What’s going on with Biden’s ‘Ministry of Truth’?

Last month, in response to a flurry of public criticism, a Biden administration official announced he was scrapping his short-lived Disinformation Governance Council — a modern take on an Orwellian “ministry of truth.”

In addition, the Department of Homeland Security accepted a letter of resignation from Nina Jankowicz, chairwoman of the council, while explaining that the public perception of the council was “grossly and intentionally distorted”.

A DHS the spokesperson said“It was never about censorship or policing in any way. It was designed to ensure that we fulfill our mission of protecting the homeland, while protecting fundamental constitutional rights.

However, the fake attacks have become a significant distraction from the department’s vital work to combat disinformation that threatens the safety and security of the American people.

Similarly, two weeks earlier, on May 1, Mayorkas had told CNN’s Dana Bash, unequivocally, that the council would not be monitoring American citizens.

“The council has no operational authority or capacity,” he said. “What it will do is bring together best practices for dealing with the threat of disinformation from adversaries of foreign cartel states and disseminate those best practices to operators who have been working to combat this threat for years. “

Over the past two days, further details have come out suggesting that:

  • The board was designed More precisely target the thoughts, words, ideas, and speeches of Americans in violation of the First Amendment;
  • There is every reason to believe that the council may still exist but operate under the radar; and,
  • Jankowicz may still be running the show.

Late last week, Republican Senators Josh Hawley of Missouri and Chuck Grassley of Iowa received documents from a DHS whistleblower stating that the agency, including its secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, its spokespersons and Jankowicz, had it all lied from the start on the purpose and scope of the advice.

Hawley said that documents he and Grassley received “reveal that DHS drafted plans for the Disinformation Governance Council as early as September 2021 and explored the possibility of partnerships with big tech companies like Twitter to help them in their efforts” .

Despite the administration’s denials, the whistleblower’s documents revealed:

  • The Disinformation Governance Council was originally designed in part to monitor national discourse regarding “conspiracy theories about the validity and security of elections” and “misinformation related to the origins and effects of COVID-19 vaccines.” 19 or the effectiveness of masks”.
  • DHS has planned a partnership with Twitter to remove disadvantaged content and has scheduled a meeting with Twitter executives to explore the concept.
  • The Disinformation Governance Council Charter was drafted in January 2022 and personally signed by Secretary Mayorkas on February 24, 2022. The document states that the charter comes into effect immediately upon the signing of the document by the Secretary.
  • Despite the secretary’s assertion that the board had yet to begin work, a scheduled meeting with social media officials appears to have been arranged by Nina Jankowicz.
  • DHS officials appear to have prepared legislation to codify a “Department of Homeland Security Rumor Control Program to Counter Disinformation, Misinformation, and Malinformation,” including a public website called “rumor control.”

It was Wednesday. Later last week, former President Barack Obama called for more censorship to “detoxify our speech”.

Ironically, he voiced his approval of censorship at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit in 2022.

“Finally, as we do all of these things, we must take steps to detoxify our discourse, especially the scourge of misinformation and conspiracy theories. [and] hate, online that has polluted our political discourse,” Obama said.

And in late May, after DHS claimed to have disbanded the board, Jankowicz tweeted that “the spread and effects of disinformation on American society have only worsened and become entrenched in domestic politics”.

She added, “This is the kind of work I was hoping to do at DHS, and the kind of work the USG badly needs to invest in. It’s the type of work I’ve built my career on – not a few uncontextual tweets. And this is the type of work that I will pursue in the public sphere.

After being reminded of DHS claims that the council would stay away from domestic politics, Jankowicz claimed she was referring to “raising awareness of falsehoods coming from the Kremlin” and that there is no had “no domestic sources” of “fighting” anywhere in the mix. ”

If there’s anything we’ve learned from this administration, it’s that if they say they want to take away your rights, you better believe them. And if they claim to protect our freedoms, suppose they are lying.

The purpose of First Amendment free speech protections is to get to the truth. Only through lively debate and the free exchange of ideas can this be accomplished.

Censorship makes one person or entity – the censor – decide what is true for the rest of society.

If it really is misinformation, they want to tackle it, remove the gags, throw away the restrictions and let the freedom ring out.
