The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday that the UN General Assembly resolution on suspending Russia’s membership of the UN Human Rights Council is an “illegal and punishing act.” politically motivated designed to exemplify a sovereign member of the UN pursuing independent domestic and foreign policies”. .
Scanning the countries that voted to suspend Russia from the HRC, the country’s foreign ministry added that the council was “de facto monopolized and exploited by a group of states”. “These States, which position themselves as beacons of human rights, directly participate in or encourage gross and massive violations of human rights,” he added.
The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday voted to suspend Russia from the world body’s top human rights body over allegations of horrific human rights abuses by soldiers. Russians in Ukraine, which the United States and Ukraine have described as war crimes.
The vote was 93 to 24 with 58 abstentions, significantly lower than the vote on two resolutions the assembly passed last month demanding an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, the withdrawal of all Russian troops and the protection of civilians. These two resolutions have been endorsed by at least 140 nations.
Russia is the second country to have its rights to join the Human Rights Council created in 2006. In 2011, the assembly suspended Libya when unrest in the North African country toppled the leader longtime Muammar Gaddafi.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden hailed Russia’s suspension from the world’s leading human rights body, saying this “significant step” by the international community has further demonstrated how President Vladimir Putin’s war has made his country an “international pariah”.
“Russian forces are committing war crimes. Russia has no place in the Human Rights Council. After today’s historic vote, Russia will not be able to participate in the work of the Council or spread its misinformation as the Council’s Investigative Committee investigates Russia’s violations and abuses of human rights in Ukraine,” he said.
