The Ministry of National Education and Higher Education has affirmed its desire to provide “nutritious meals to healthy standards” in school canteens.
In a circular distributed to principals of public schools, the ministry specified a list of food items in school canteens for the 2022-2023 school year, noting that it will provide daily free meals in these canteens for some students.
The ministry noted that vendors must commit to providing meals in accordance with approved nominal prices and nutritional standards and guidelines required for Qatar, based on the food items to be served daily. Thus, two products from all groups are available daily, as well as food products served once a week.
In addition, certain prohibited foods must not be served in school canteens.
The ministry said that the food menu in school canteens will include a detailed explanation of the three daily, weekly and prohibited foods mentioned, emphasizing the need to meet the nutritional standards required for each category in canteens.
In a related context, the ministry pointed out that a set of special dishes, soups and hot drinks are provided only to students of preparatory and secondary schools.
