Russian Defense Ministry says destroyed Western weapons sent to Ukraine using Kalibr cruise missiles

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday (May 21) that the armed forces destroyed a large arms shipment in northwestern Ukraine using long-range missiles. The cargo was apparently provided by the West.

“Sea-based, long-range high-precision Kalibr missiles destroyed a large batch of weapons and military equipment near Malin railway station in Zhytomyr region, delivered from the United States and European countries” , did he declare.

Russia began the invasion of Ukraine on February 24 in order to “demilitarize” and “denazify” the pro-Western country. However, Russia faced Ukrainian resistance.

The United States and several other Western allies have supplied arms to Ukraine. Weapons included artillery, anti-aircraft missiles, anti-tank weapons, etc. Russia has often warned the West against arms deliveries to Ukraine.

After the latest decision to destroy a large shipment, the Russian ministry said the weapons were intended for Ukrainian forces in the eastern Donbass region.

It is a Russian-speaking area partially controlled by pro-Moscow separatists since 2014.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the war can only be resolved through “diplomacy”, which has apparently failed so far.

He told a Ukrainian television channel that the “end [of war] will be done through diplomacy”. He said the war “will be bloody, there will be fighting but will definitely end only through diplomacy”.

“Discussions between Ukraine and Russia will definitely take place. In what format I don’t know — with intermediaries, without them, in a larger group, at the presidential level,” he said.

“There are things that can only be achieved at the negotiating table. We want everything to go back (to the way it was) but Russia doesn’t want that,” he said.
