Ministry of Emergencies on duty 2 weeks after Yerevan market explosion, 1 person still missing

Search operations came to a halt two weeks after the explosion at Surmalu commercial market in Yerevan, and Armenia’s Emergency Situations Ministry (MES) is currently only on duty there, the spokesperson said. of the MES, Hayk Kostanyan, at Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“When the commission of inquiry has completed its activities, it will be clear to them how the [market] owner solves the future problem of the building, we will terminate the obligation accordingly. A citizen is considered missing. In fact, he was at the epicenter of the explosion, the rescuers did not find him, the investigative committee will issue a statement about him,” Kostanyan added.

Three people were arrested on Sunday in connection with the explosion at Surmalu market; they were the warehouse users of this Market. The deputy director of the Yerevan cannery was however released, as the court did not grant the request for arrest.

A loud explosion took place at the Surmalu commercial market on August 14. As a result, 16 people died and one person is considered missing. However, the search for this missing person has ceased. Three injured continue to be treated in various hospitals; they are in satisfactory condition.
