The Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) pledged to continue to strengthen their cooperation, in particular the protection of migrant workers.
The pledge was made during a meeting between Ith Samheng, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, visiting Dr Nenette Motus, IOM Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific and Kristin Parco, Chief of Mission at IOM Cambodia on 25 April.
Dr Motus requested the Minister to support the implementation of IOM’s Poverty Reduction Phase II of the Safe Migration, Skills Development and Improved Placement project in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and in Thailand (PROMISE) for 2021-2025 in Cambodia.
Dr. Motus highlighted that PROMISE is a regional program implemented by IOM and supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
IOM has also pledged to provide technical and intellectual support related to immigration meetings when Cambodia hosts the ASEAN meeting this year, as well as support for Cambodia’s migration policy.
For his part, Minister Samheng thanked IOM and hailed the organization’s vital role in lasting resolution of immigration issues and as an indispensable partner in Asia and the Pacific region and Cambodia.
The Minister supported IOM’s request to continue its Phase II PROMISES in Cambodia, and asked IOM to increase collaboration with the Ministry on technical assistance for the prevention of the Covid-19 pandemic to Cambodian migrant workers.
He also urged the organization to support the implementation of the outcomes of the 3rd CLMVT Ministerial Conference related to the Siem Reap Roadmap towards the release of the Labor Minister’s Statement on Social Security Mobility for CLMVT migrant workers. AKP-Lim Nary
