JERUSALEM, Feb 14 (Reuters) – Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian man in a clash in the occupied West Bank as troops prepared to demolish the home of a man accused of killing an Israeli, the government said on Monday. Palestinian Ministry of Health and witnesses.

Fighting erupted Sunday evening in the village of Silat al-Harithiya, home to a Palestinian who was arrested and charged with the murder, in a drive-by shooting near the Jewish outpost of Homesh on December 16 .

Witnesses said Palestinian soldiers and gunmen exchanged fire after troops arrived to carry out the demolition. The Israeli army said it would destroy one floor of the house where the attacker had lived.

Hundreds of Palestinians threw rocks and petrol bombs at the soldiers, who responded with “riot gear and also fired at gunmen they had spotted”, the Israeli army said, without confirm death.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, one Palestinian was killed and 10 were injured.

Israel says demolitions carried out at attackers’ homes can help deter future attacks. Rights groups have denounced the measure, which often targets homes where other family members also live, as collective punishment.
