Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 4, 2022 (SKNIS): The Department of Health continues to work in partnership with various stakeholders to promote health and well-being throughout the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. On February 3, 2022, the Ministry of Health launched the ‘Healthy Business Challenge 2022’. The Director of the Health Promotion Unit, Dr. Marissa Carty, spoke about the importance of a healthy workplace.

“If you were to type the phrase healthy workplace into Google search, you would get about 2,000,000 results. This indicates that providing a healthy work environment is a hot topic. More and more companies and organizations are looking for ways to improve the health and well-being of employees. The WHO (World Health Organization) defines a healthy workplace as one in which workers and managers work together to use a process of continuous improvement to protect and promote health, safety and worker well-being and workplace sustainability taking into account: health and safety issues in the physical work environment; health, safety and well-being concerns in the psychosocial work environment, including work organization and workplace culture; personal health resources in the workplace; and ways to participate in the community to improve the health of workers, their families and other community members,” Dr. Carty said.

Companies are encouraged to develop a health and wellness plan to promote a better working environment. Dr. Carty said the Department of Health has developed comprehensive resources that will enable businesses, departments and organizations to develop a comprehensive workplace wellness program.

“The Department of Health, through the Health Promotion Unit, has developed a comprehensive resource that will enable businesses, departments and organizations to develop a comprehensive workplace wellness program which will not only benefit the employees, but also the work environment and the community. Whether you are a small establishment or a large business group, the Healthy Business Challenge can be tailored to meet your specific needs. Additionally, the Health Promotion Unit stands ready to provide the resources necessary to ensure your success…promoting workplace wellness is one of any employer’s best investments,” said Dr. Carty.

The Global Wellness Institute defines workplace wellness as “any workplace health promotion activity or organizational policy designed to promote healthy behavior among employees and to improve health outcomes.” The Department of Health will continue to develop programs and strategies aimed at reducing the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) throughout the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
